The best background remover depends on what happens after the cutout: a quick transparent PNG, a design in an editor, a batch of product shots, or free images you are allowed to sell with. We compared ten tools on the limits, prices and terms they publish.
How we compared them
For all ten background remover tools, every figure below comes from the tool's own pricing page, help center or terms, read on 17 and 18 September 2026 with US prices. We did not score cutout quality, because results vary with the photo and a fair test needs far more images than a list like this can show. Instead we looked at four things you can check before uploading anything:
- Account: can you remove a background and download without signing up?
- Free limit: how many images, and at what size?
- Commercial use: do the terms allow free results in business work?
- Price: what does the cheapest paid option with background removal cost?
CutoutBG AI is our own tool, and we list it first. The reason is its free allowance: no account, full-size downloads and commercial use are all published together, which is uncommon. Its gaps are listed too.

The best free background remover options, one by one
1. CutoutBG AI
A browser tool that only does backgrounds: transparent, white or any color, a blurred version of the original, or a photo you upload. Guests get three images a day and signed-in users ten, at the size uploaded up to 36 megapixels, without a watermark and with commercial use allowed. Paid plans start at $9.99 a month for 400 images. It has no templates, layers, batch upload, API, manual refine brush or video and GIF support.
2. Adobe Firefly and Adobe Express
Firefly removes backgrounds for free with an Adobe account, using daily generations whose number Adobe does not publish, and downloads a transparent PNG. Express has the same one-click action inside its design editor; Adobe's own pages disagree on whether it is free there. Adobe says generative AI outputs can generally be used commercially.

3. Canva
Canva's BG Remover is built into the editor and is one of its paid features, on Pro, Business, Education and Nonprofit plans. It handles photos under 9 MB, scales anything over 10 megapixels down to 10, and can process a folder of up to 50 images. It is the natural choice if your design already lives in Canva.
4. Photoroom
Built for sellers, Photoroom wraps the cutout in templates, AI scenes and bulk tools. Free accounts get 100 exports a month at up to 2000 pixels on the web, for personal, non-commercial use only. Its Pro plan is $12.99 monthly, or $89.99 for a year, with 1,000 exports a month.
5. Pixelcut
Web and phone apps with AI backdrops, shadows, batch exports and an API. Without an account you can download a preview-size cutout; the full resolution is free once you sign in. The help center mentions typically three free uses a day, and Pro costs $10 a month or $8 a month billed yearly.
6. Pixlr
A free, ad-supported browser editor whose background remover needs no account and handles batches of more than 100 images, up to 4096 × 4096 pixels. Free saves are capped daily, although the number is not published, and manual Draw, Magic and Lasso brushes help with tricky edges. Plus removes ads and the cap from $1.99 a month billed yearly.
7. Picsart
A broad creative editor for social graphics where background removal is one tool among many, with AI backgrounds, stickers and effects. Picsart's help center says images made with its tools can be used commercially, but it does not publish the free limits. Pro costs $15 a month or $10.50 a month billed yearly.
8. Clipdrop
Now part of Jasper, Clipdrop's pricing page lists 20 free background removals per 24 hours, with high-resolution output on its Pro plan. The web tool accepts up to ten files per drop and, according to its FAQ, images up to 5000 × 5000 pixels. The Pro price was not readable on its pricing page.
9. Fotor
Fotor's tool page promises free HD downloads with no watermark and no sign-up, while its pricing page lists watermarked exports on the free Basic plan and watermark-free transparent PNGs on Pro. It accepts files up to 60 MB and 8192 × 8192 pixels and also removes video backgrounds. Check the download before relying on the free tier.
10. remove.bg
The original one-click remover is closing its standalone website on 1 December 2026, with background removal moving to Canva and its API to Leonardo.ai. Until then, free previews are limited to 0.25 megapixels for personal use.

What is the best free background remover?
For free results you can use commercially at full size without an account, CutoutBG AI publishes exactly that: three images a day, ten when signed in. Pixlr is also free without an account, up to 4096 pixels, with an unpublished daily cap. Photoroom's free plan is capped at 2000 pixels and personal use.
What is the best background remover for GIFs?
None of the image tools above keep a GIF's animation, CutoutBG AI included. Unscreen, the best-known option, has shut down and now redirects to Canva, whose video background remover is a Pro feature. ezgif removes a GIF background for free, but only by making one or a few solid colors transparent, not with AI.
What is the best background remover app?
On phones, Photoroom, Pixelcut and Picsart all have iPhone and Android apps with the remover built in, and Canva's app includes BG Remover on paid plans. On iPhone, the Photos app can also lift a subject off its background without any extra app.
Which is the best AI background remover?
Every tool here uses AI to find the subject, so the useful differences are the limits around it: free size, account rules and commercial terms. Compare those in the table first, then try two or three tools on one of your own photos.
