Pixlr Background Remover: Free Saves, Plans and Limits

Pixlr's cutout tool lives at pixlr.com/remove-background, and a feature page describes the full workflow:

1. Open the Remove BG tool and upload one photo or several at once.
2. Choose a transparent, white or black background, and use Auto Crop if you want the frame trimmed to the subject.
3. For edges that need work, open Fine Tune and use the Draw, Magic or Lasso tools, with softness set to none, light or medium.
4. Save each image as a PNG, or download all of them as a ZIP.

Pixlr also links a separate Remove BG app on Google Play, although its own list of mobile apps does not include it. Pixlr says the tool handles images up to 4096 × 4096 pixels and batches of more than 100 images. The accepted formats differ between two Pixlr pages, one listing JPEG, PNG and BMP and the other adding WebP.

How free is it?

Pixlr is more generous in its wording than most: its homepage says the free version works without an account or any charges, and the feature page calls the background remover completely free for all users. There is still a limit. The interface includes a message saying you have used all of your daily free saves, the Plus plan advertises unlimited saves, and Pixlr's terms mention daily caps and cooldown periods for AI services. The number of free saves per day is not published.

Other free-tier details are also unstated: whether free output is reduced from the 4096-pixel limit, whether saves carry a watermark and the largest file you can upload. The free editor shows ads; removing them is one of the things Plus sells.

Can you use Pixlr cutouts commercially?

Pixlr's License and Services Agreement, updated 4 June 2026, says AI content may be used for personal and commercial purposes, with a short summary that AI outputs can be used commercially as long as you don't claim they are made by a person. It doesn't separate free and paid users. The agreement also doesn't name the background remover specifically, although Pixlr markets it as an AI tool. In return, the agreement gives Pixlr a broad, permanent license to the images you put in and the results you get out.

These are Pixlr's US dollar prices on 18 September 2026. Plus is the cheapest paid plan among the editors we review. Pixlr does not refund subscriptions once payment has gone through, and its image generator offers a free trial worth 250 credits.

Other background options

Beyond transparent, white and black, Pixlr's Express editor has a Backdrop tool that can add blur, motion or depth, or generate a new background. Its background changer page describes a manual method in the full editor, using the Magic Wand to select and delete the background and then adding a picture as a layer. There is no public API; the address where one would be returned a "not found" page.

Pixlr compared with CutoutBG AI

The two tools overlap more than most. Pixlr adds manual refine brushes, batch processing and a full editor with ads; CutoutBG AI publishes its free limits, accepts larger images and offers blurred or photo backgrounds, but has no manual brushes.

Verdict

Pixlr is a strong free choice when you want to fix edges by hand or process a folder of images, and Plus at $1.99 a month, billed yearly, removes ads and the save cap for very little. If your photos are larger than 4096 pixels, or you want a blurred or photo background without an editor, CutoutBG AI covers that with published limits.
