How to add a white background to a photo

White backgrounds for product photos
Searches for add white background to photo, make background white and white background for photos all describe the same task, and marketplaces differ on what they actually require. Only some of it is written down:
- Amazon. Its Sell on Amazon blog tells sellers to shoot against a white background with RGB values 255, 255, 255, and to let the product fill 85% or more of the frame. A staff post in the Seller Forums repeats both under the heading "Main Image Requirements". The Seller Central help page itself could not be read, so treat these as seller guidance rather than quoted policy, and check your category.
- eBay. Its picture policy sets no background colour requirement; white or neutral is a recommendation.
- Shopify. A store builder, not a marketplace, so there is no main-image rule at all. Its own help pages simply note that images with transparent backgrounds have to be saved as PNG.
- Etsy. Transparent PNGs are not supported and transparent areas appear black, according to its help centre, so export a filled background rather than a cutout.
Because the fill here is exactly 255, 255, 255, a product shot comes out matching the strictest of those numbers. What the tool cannot fix is lighting: a grey shadow under a bottle stays a grey shadow, it simply sits on white now.

White background for school IDs, work badges and CVs
Plenty of everyday photos want a plain background without any official rulebook behind them:
- School and student ID photos, where the school asks for a plain background.
- Work badges and staff directories, so a team page looks consistent even though the photos were taken in different rooms.
- CV and LinkedIn headshots, where a tidy background keeps attention on the face.
- Club, exam and course registration forms that ask for a head-and-shoulders photo.
A headshot white background also keeps a staff directory consistent, and a product photo white background is what most marketplaces expect from a main image.
For all of these, the organisation asking for the photo sets the rules: check the size, the ratio and whether they want white or light grey before you submit. Passports and visas are a different matter, and the next section explains why.
Passport and visa photos: check the official rules first
We do not recommend this tool, or any background remover, for passport or visa photos. Passport photo background rules are set by each issuing authority, and several of them demand an unedited photograph in so many words:
- United States. A plain white or off-white background, and: do not change your photo using computer software, phone apps or filters, or artificial intelligence. Photos that look edited are rejected.
- United Kingdom. Digital photos must be taken against a plain light-coloured background and be unaltered by computer software. Printed photos call for plain cream or light grey, not white.
- Canada. A plain white or light-coloured background, with a clear difference between face and background.
- India. White is specified for passport photographs.
- ICAO, whose technical report underpins many national rules, states that image processing aimed at background removal must not be implemented, and that the issuing authority may alter the background later itself.
The practical answer is to take the photo against a plain light wall, or to visit a photo shop that knows the current rules. Rules also change and differ by country, so read your own authority's page on the day you apply.
Pure white or off-white?
The Color option fills with pure white by default, the same 255, 255, 255 that marketplaces name. If you want something softer, open the custom colour picker and choose a slightly warm off-white such as #FAF7F0 or a light grey: a softer background hides dust and halos better on printed photos.
When you need any other colour, or a photo instead of a flat fill, the same panel handles it.
FAQ
How to add a white background to a photo
Upload the photo, pick the Color option with the white swatch, and download. The background is replaced rather than painted over, so the edge follows the subject instead of a rectangle, and the fill is exactly 255, 255, 255.
What color background for passport photo
It depends on the country. The United States asks for plain white or off-white, Canada for plain white or light-coloured, India for white, and the United Kingdom for plain light-coloured digital photos or cream or light grey printed ones. Always read your own authority's current page rather than a summary.
Can I remove background for passport photo
You should not. The United States, United Kingdom and Canada all require the photograph to be unedited by software, and the ICAO technical report says background removal must not be applied. Photograph yourself against a plain light wall instead, or use a photo shop.
Will the white match what Amazon asks for?
The fill is pure white, RGB 255, 255, 255, which is the value Amazon's seller guidance names. Its other points are about the shot itself, such as the product filling 85% or more of the frame, and no background tool changes those.
My subject has white in it. Will it disappear?
No. The model separates subject from background instead of deleting a colour, so a white shirt, white packaging or a white pet stays. Where subject and background are both white and touch each other, check that edge at full size before you publish.
