How to remove a background with Photoroom

There are two ways into Photoroom remove background: the public tool page and the web app behind it.

The public tool page promises a fast, free cutout and advertises "no signup required". The step-by-step guide in Photoroom's help center starts differently, with logging in to the web app:

1. Log in at app.photoroom.com and pick a Space.
2. Open AI Tools, then Background Remover, and upload a photo.
3. Edit further if you like, then download as PNG, JPEG or WebP.

When Photoroom creates your account, it sets up a free Space automatically. The same background remover is in the iPhone, iPad and Android apps, and Photoroom also offers a Shopify app, a Figma plug-in and a ChatGPT version. There is no separate desktop program; on a computer, the web app is the product.

What the free plan includes

Photoroom Free counts exports rather than cutouts. A free account gets 100 exports a month, renewed monthly, and Photoroom's help center adds a daily limit on its free utilities, including the background remover, without publishing the number.

Size is the limit most people notice. On the web, free exports are scaled down to 2000 pixels on the longest side; in the mobile apps the cap is 750 × 550 pixels. Imports on the web are accepted up to 4032 × 4032 pixels, so a large camera photo loses detail on the way out. A transparent background is available on every plan, including Free. Batch mode and the API require a paid plan.

Can you use free Photoroom results commercially?

No. Photoroom's terms, effective 29 July 2026, license free accounts "for your own personal, non commercial purposes", and its help center states plainly that free accounts cannot be used for commercial work. That rules out product listings, client work and ads on the free plan. Paid plans are licensed for the customer's internal business purposes, and Photoroom says it does not claim ownership of your content.

On paid plans the background remover is a core tool that uses no AI credits, within fair-use limits, and web exports go up to 4032 × 4032 pixels (2000 × 2000 in batch mode). Some plans start with a 7-day free trial on the first upgraded Space, and Photoroom says it refunds customers up to one week after purchase. Prices include VAT.

Beyond cutting out: backgrounds, batch and API

After a photo is cut out, Photoroom can keep the result transparent or white, fill a solid color, apply a template, use your own image, or generate a new scene with AI; the AI backgrounds use credits. There is also a background blur tool, batch editing on paid plans, and a Remove Background API priced at $0.02 per image.

Photoroom compared with CutoutBG AI

CutoutBG AI is the narrower tool: it clears the background and offers four things to put behind the subject (nothing, white or another color, a softened copy of the original surroundings, or your own picture). There are no templates, no batch mode and no API.

Verdict

Photoroom is the better choice for a shop that edits many product photos, wants templates and AI scenes, and is ready to pay: Pro billed yearly works out to $7.50 a month for 1,000 exports. For occasional commercial cutouts at full size, the free plan's personal-use rule and 2000-pixel cap are the catch, and a tool whose free results are licensed for business use is the simpler fit.
