How to blur the background of a picture
Add the photo
Any photo within the free 25 MB limit, in JPG, PNG or WebP. Portraits, pets, food and products all work.
Switch the background option to Blur
The subject is detected first, then everything else is softened. Nothing is cropped, moved or replaced.
Set the strength and download
Drag the slider between 1 and 100, starting at 50. The result downloads as JPG, since a blurred background fills every pixel and leaves nothing transparent to preserve.
Blur a photo you already took
Phone portrait modes decide the effect while you shoot, and they only offer it on some cameras, at some distances, on some subjects. Reach for this blur photo editor, or any photo blur tool, when you want to add blur to photo files that already exist:
- A photo taken in a hurry on the main camera, where everything came out equally sharp.
- An older picture from a camera with no portrait mode at all.
- A screenshot or a scan where re-shooting is impossible.
- A shot where the phone's own portrait mode carved a chunk out of someone's hair and you want another attempt.
Because the separation is the same one used to cut backgrounds out entirely, fine edges stay with the subject instead of dissolving into the soft area.

Control the blur strength
One slider, 1 to 100, and it starts at 50. What the numbers do in practice:

The blur is applied to the original background rather than to a stand-in, so the colours behind the subject stay the colours of the place where the photo was taken. That is the difference between a blurred photo and a subject pasted onto grey.
Blur, remove, or replace?
Three ways to deal with a background, and they solve different problems:
- Blur keeps the context and takes away the distraction. The setting is still yours, just quieter.
- Removing it leaves the subject alone on transparency, which is what you want for slides, stickers and design work.
- Replacing it puts the subject somewhere else entirely, using a flat colour or another photo.
All three start from the same upload, and every attempt draws one image from your allowance.
When blur is the wrong tool
Blur softens; it does not censor. Text, faces and number plates in a blurred background can still be partly readable, especially at low strength, and the blur covers the whole background rather than a region you choose. If your aim is to hide personal information, crop it out or cover it with a solid shape in an editor instead.
Two more limits worth knowing: this blurs the background, not the entire picture, so it will not give you a uniformly soft image; and anything the model reads as part of the subject stays sharp, including a hand or a tool held in it.

How to blur the background of a picture

How to blur background of photo already taken
Exactly the same way: this works on a finished file, which is the point. No portrait mode is needed on the camera that took it, and old photos from any device work as long as the file is a JPG, PNG or WebP.
Can I blur image background areas only?
That is exactly what happens: only the background is softened and the subject keeps its original sharpness. If you want the entire picture blurred instead, that is a filter in a normal photo editor rather than a background tool.
Can I use it as a photo blur tool for faces?
Not reliably. The blur follows the background, not a region you pick, so a face that belongs to the subject stays sharp and a face in the background is softened but may still be recognisable. For privacy, use an editor that lets you cover a specific area.
What does the result download as?
JPG. A blurred background fills every pixel, so there is nothing transparent to keep, and JPG holds the file size down. Keeping the background transparent instead produces a PNG.
