Transparent background vs. lowering opacity
Two different jobs share the phrase "make image transparent", and mixing them up wastes an afternoon:
- A transparent background means the area around your subject is deleted. The subject itself stays fully solid. That is what this tool produces.
- A see-through image means the whole picture is faded so you can read text underneath it. That is an opacity setting in whatever app you place the image in, not something baked into the file.
If your goal is a watermark or a faded hero image, export a normal file and lower its opacity in Canva, PowerPoint, Figma or your CMS. If your goal is a subject with nothing behind it, you are on the right page.
Why transparency needs PNG, not JPG
The JPEG format has no channel for "nothing here", so every JPG fills empty areas with a color, usually white. Save a cutout as JPG and the transparency turns into a white rectangle the moment you place it on a colored slide.
PNG carries an alpha channel, one extra value per pixel that says how solid that pixel is. WebP supports alpha as well. That extra channel is also what makes soft edges possible: single hairs and blurred rims come back partly transparent instead of as a hard cut, which is why a cutout blends into a new layout instead of looking pasted.
Results here come out as PNG whenever you keep the background transparent, and a solid color stays PNG too. A blur or a photo background produces a JPG instead, because those results have no empty pixels left to protect.
Make a white background transparent
Logos, signatures, stamps and scanned drawings usually arrive as a white rectangle. To make white background transparent, upload the file and keep Transparent: the white disappears while the mark itself stays intact. Two things worth knowing:
- White inside the subject stays. The model separates subject from background rather than deleting a color, so the white of an eye, a shirt or a paper label survives.
- Scans need a closer look. If the paper in a scan is grey or uneven rather than clean white, the cutout is usually still clean, but check the edges at full size before you use it in print.
Where transparent cutouts get used
- Slides and documents — drop a product or a person onto any colored layout without a white box around them.
- Online stores — marketplaces often want a plain background instead of transparency. Etsy, for one, displays transparent areas as black, so export white there.
- Design files — a transparent PNG drops straight into Figma, Canva or Photoshop as its own layer.
- Stickers and print — die-cut stickers and iron-ons need the shape, not the rectangle.

Why does my PNG look like it has a white background?
Two common causes. Either the file was saved as JPG somewhere along the way, which drops transparency, or the app previewing it paints white behind empty pixels. Open it in a browser tab, which draws a checkerboard or the page colour instead, to check what the file really holds.
Can I put the subject on something else afterwards?
Yes, without starting over: pick a solid color, a blur of the original, or your own photo before you download. Each run uses one image from your daily allowance, so trying two versions costs two.
