Adobe Background Remover: What Express, Firefly and Photoshop Offer

Adobe Express background remover

Express is Adobe's template-based design app. According to its help page, you can run it as a one-step quick action, or select an image inside a design and choose Remove Background in the Image panel on the left.

Whether it is free depends on which Adobe page you read. The plan comparison table, checked again on 18 September 2026, marks Remove Image Background as included on the Free plan, along with export as PNG with a transparent background. A business FAQ on the Express pricing page says the opposite, listing remove background among premium editing features that need an upgrade. Express Premium was US$9.99 a month with no annual commitment and a 30-day free trial.

For an Adobe transparent background in a design, the help text describes clicking outside the canvas, setting the Background to No fill and choosing Transparent PNG when you download.

One thing that confuses people: if you search for remove bg Adobe and click the old Express background remover link, it now redirects to the Firefly page. The Express editor still has its own button; only the stand-alone page moved.

Adobe Firefly Remove Background

This is the page most people land on today, and it is where Adobe's "Remove the background from your image for free" headline lives. The steps Adobe gives are:

1. Log in with an Adobe ID, or create a free account.
2. In the Edit tab, choose Remove Background from the Quick Actions menu on the left.
3. Click Download at the top right to save a PNG with a transparent background.

Free users spend their free daily generations on it, and Adobe says a paid Firefly plan unlocks unlimited use. It does not publish how many free generations you get. Its own pages also disagree on the rhythm: the plans page says limits refresh every day, while an older help article describes a monthly allowance.

The uploader accepts JPEG, PNG and WebP up to 40 MB, although the FAQ on the same page says 100 MB. Uploading means confirming you are 18 or older. Firefly can also fill the gap with a solid colour or a generated scene, and batch removal is reserved for enterprise customers.

Photoshop's Remove Background quick action

Photoshop has had one-click removal since its November 2019 release. The button sits in two places, the Quick Actions list of the Properties panel and the floating Contextual Task Bar, and the layer has to be unlocked first. It runs Select Subject, hides the background with a layer mask and leaves the pixels intact, so you can paint the mask back with a brush. Select and Mask with Refine Hair handles fine edges.

Is there an Adobe free background remover?

Yes, with conditions. Firefly is free with an Adobe account up to an unpublished daily limit. Express lists the feature on its Free plan, although one of Adobe's own FAQs says otherwise. Photoshop is free only during its trial.

On commercial use, Adobe's Express pricing FAQ says that outputs from generative AI features may in general be used commercially, apart from beta features marked for personal use, and it makes no distinction between free and paid plans. Adobe's General Terms add that you keep all rights and ownership of your content. We found no Adobe page that speaks specifically about a background cutout made on a free account, so read those statements as general rather than a specific licence.
