Remove a logo background in three steps

How to remove white background from logo files

Most logos with a white box were saved as JPG somewhere along the way, pasted from a document, or exported by someone who didn't need transparency. JPG has no way to store empty pixels, so the white stays until you remove it.

As a logo background remover, this tool works on the shape of the logo rather than a single color value, so a white background is cleared while the logo keeps its own colors. Two things are worth checking afterwards:

  • White parts inside the logo. Letters with white counters, or a white icon inside a colored badge, should stay white. Look at them on the checkerboard preview before you download.
  • Light halos. A thin pale rim around dark lettering usually means the edge pixels were mixed with the old white. It shows most on dark backgrounds, so test the PNG on the color you plan to use.

Scanned, photographed and dark logos

A scanned logo often sits on grey or uneven paper rather than clean white. The cutout usually still works, but check faint strokes, which can fade into a grey scan.

A photographed logo, from a sign, a shirt or a printed box, keeps the perspective and texture of the photo. The background disappears, but the logo stays as photographed; it will not come out flat and front-on.

A dark logo on a dark background needs enough contrast for the edges to be found. If the outline of the logo is hard to see by eye, the result will be uneven too; a better source file helps more than anything else.

The download is a transparent PNG: a pixel image at the size you uploaded. It is ideal for websites, documents, presentations and social graphics, but it does not scale up cleanly, and nothing here enlarges or redraws it. If you remove the background from a logo that is 200 pixels wide, the PNG is 200 pixels wide too.

For print, signage or embroidery, ask the designer for the original vector file, which may already be transparent. If there is no vector original, tracing the logo in a vector app such as Illustrator is the usual route.
