How to change background color of a photo

Choosing a background color that works
The six swatches are white, black, a light studio grey (#F2F2F2), a strong blue, a red and a warm yellow. They cover most jobs, but the color that works best depends on the subject in front of it:
- Contrast with the edges. Dark hair against a dark fill loses its outline, and a white shirt against white disappears. Pick a color that separates the subject's edges, not just its middle.
- Match your brand. A background in your own brand color makes thumbnails, avatars and slides recognisable at a glance. Copy the hex code from your style guide into the custom picker.
- Keep a set consistent. When photos sit side by side, in a catalogue, a team page or a grid of posts, one shared background color makes them read as a set even if they were shot in different places.
- Think about print. Screen colors are defined in RGB, which is what the hex code describes. If the image is going to a printer, ask for a proof, because some bright screen colors cannot be printed exactly.
What this background color changer does, and what it doesn't
This tool does one job: the photo background becomes a flat, even color. The subject keeps its own pixels and shading, and soft edges such as hair or fur stay partly see-through, so they blend into the new color instead of ending in a hard line.
It does not paint gradients, patterns or textures, and it will not add background color to photo areas that belong to the subject. For those, create the background as an image first, then upload it with the Image option, which places your subject in front of any picture you choose.

It also does not recolour the subject. If you want to change the color of a shirt or a product itself, that is a job for a photo editor, not a background tool.
White, a color or something else?
Plain white is the most common request by far, mainly because many marketplaces ask for it, so it has a page of its own with the details. A colored background suits everything where standing out matters more than matching a rule: social posts, profile pictures, event graphics and slides.
When a single color feels too flat, softening the original surroundings keeps the place without the clutter.

How to change background color

How to change background color of photo files for a brand

Can I change background color of image files to a gradient?
Not with the Color option, which fills a single flat color. Make the gradient as an image in any design app, then upload it as the background with the Image option.
Why do the edges of my subject look tinted?
Fine hair and blurred rims are kept partly transparent, so they take on some of the new color. Against a very dark or very saturated fill that shows more; a lighter or less saturated shade usually looks more natural.
Is the result a PNG or a JPG?
A PNG, at the same pixel size as the photo you uploaded. Only blurred and photo backgrounds are saved as JPG.
